Mesa Verde Library News  January 2008

By Grace M. Barnes

Branch Manager

Winter is here. The cooler weather is perfect for getting cozy before a fire with a good book and reading to your heart’s content. This is one of my favorite times of year at the library. It is the slow time of year, time to reflect on the year past and plan for the coming New Year.

Children’s programming has been busy this year.  The Storytimes ended this month with a highly successful visit from Santa. He read stories to the kids and took time to talk to each child. Storytime begins again at the end of January. Please call the library at 714-546-5274 to register for Storytime or for more details.

Origami Kai will return for their annual visit on January 24th. Registration is required. You can do this in person at the library or by phone.

With the coming New Year, I will be moving to the El Toro Library.  It has been a wonderful pleasure to work with you, the Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries and the staff of all three of the libraries.  It has been great to work with the patrons of the Mesa Verde Library.  Costa Mesa has impressed me with its growth and sense of community.

Most of all it has been inspiring to see the growth that the Friends have experienced since I came to Mesa Verde Library in May 2004. You have developed into a progressing, expanding and cutting edge Friends group. You are the first Friends group in OCPL to use a passport service to raise funds. You developed one of the best pre-owned book stores in Orange County here at the Mesa Verde Library. All your hard work is focused on a new state-of-the-arts library.  And I know you will succeed in all your efforts. It has been a very great honor to be a very small part of this.

It is hard to leave Mesa Verde with its wonderful staff and great patrons.  I plan to stop by from time to time. You will see me here when you open the doors to your new state-of-the-arts library.

A Very Giving Bookstore

By Sherrie Neft

This year, our “Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries” Mesa Verde Branch Library Bookstore will be celebrating its second anniversary with a big bash, public invited, on March 15, 2008. We are more organized and efficient than ever. We sell gift certificates, book bags, DVD’s, CD’s, audio books, books with large print, VHS movies (we still have some available), books of all categories, and we always provide membership to “Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries” for the low price of $15.00 yearly.  All of this helps to support our three Costa Mesa libraries.

We continue to offer special sales, and special, very low prices including the “buck a bag” on Saturdays and Sundays, and fabulous, very low priced “teacher sets.” So often teachers, reading specialists, school librarians, and other school resource personnel use their own money to supplement materials that schools do not provide.

We are very proud to say that we have donated many of our surplus books to a number of charity organizations as follows: the Theo Lacy Jail, Shelters, senior citizens centers and retirement homes, the Fairview Developmental Center, the Early Literacy Program for Low Income Families, Reach Out and Read, and the Home Based Activities Building Language Acquisition Program (HABLA), just to mention a few. Our goal is to continue assisting these programs with our excess books.

All our bookstore materials are donations from our very generous Costa  Mesa community. All our bookstore workers including managers are volunteers who are a very cooperative, cohesive group of bookstore aficionados giving their energy, time, labor and dedication to this success.

We can always use more committed volunteers who would love a fun, worthwhile experience a few hours a week helping categorize, price, and make decisions about books, in a clean, well organized, stylish environment, with decor to represent the current season and holidays.

Please do come in and enjoy!! Our normal hours are:

Days/Hours: Tues. through Thursday, Sat, Sun

1:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M.

Location: Corner of Mesa Verde East and Baker, behind MV Library in SE corner of the parking lot

Mesa Verde Branch

Summer is winding down, cooler weather is here and fall is just around the corner. We have had a very busy summer.

The Summer Reading Program was very popular this year with its mystery theme – Get a Clue @ Your Library. 394 children and 89 teens registered for the program this year. Over half of them completed the program. This is a huge success. There were 52 teen volunteers who worked 625 hours. At the same time attendance for Mesa Verde was up 8% from 2006.

Thank you so much for all your hard work and support. You, the Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries, have made this year’s success what it is. Without you, children’s programming would be very thin. Children’s programming is vital to the existence of libraries. It is through this programming that children are introduced to the library, learn to enjoy the library, learn to use the library and hopefully become lifelong library users. It is our vision for kids to see that the library is a fun and adventurous place to go. Thank you just doesn’t seem to be enough for all that your hard efforts accomplish for the library. The community you serve appreciates it more than you know.

In addition to children’s programming, you also provide some adult programming. In August, Orion Tippen presented “Successful Selling on eBay.” We hope to be able to provide more adult programming through the year with your help.

In September we were very fortunate to be able to participate in Read for the Record 2007. READ/Orange County in partnership with Jumpstart, Americorps and Orange County Public Libraries performed a reading of the children’s book The Story of Ferdinand.  Each family attending received a copy of the book to take home.

Storytimes start up in October and runs through December. The school-aged programs at the end of the month started in September with the “Story of Ferdinand” program. “Spooky Tales” will be in October and in November “Rise Up, Read, Celebrate.” Stop by the library or call for more information: 714-546-5274.

The very busy summer has spilled into a busy fall season as school goes into full swing. There is always something happening at the Library. Hope to see you there.

The Costa Mesa/Donald Dungan Branch

By Susan Sassone, Branch Manager

The Costa Mesa/Donald Dungan Branch celebrated its twenty year anniversary with an open house. The Friends sponsored the happy occasion with cake, live music and a DJ. Several patrons enjoyed the slide show presentation of the library’s history presented by Karen Emerson, new manager of the Costa Mesa Tech Branch. One of the visitors said that the branch looked as though it was just constructed because of the new lighting, paint, carpets, computers and chairs. There is a beautiful new Southwest theme carpet in the Spanish language area making a nice place for families to sit and read. The library is starting to check out to patrons the beautiful new book bags designed by the Costa Mesa Friend of the Libraries, Dennis Baron. These bags were purchased by the Friends for library patrons to use.  The Friends also sell these book bags at the bargain price of $7.50 each.

Laura Carr, the branch’s new Children’s Librarian, offers two Storytimes a week and two Saturdays a month for crafts.  Laura is making plans for an after school program as well. The Storytimes are on Monday mornings at 11 am and Wednesdays at 7 pm. No sign ups are needed. The Friends bought new paperback display spinners for the children’s area. Since there is more room for the children’s books, the branch is soliciting children’s paperbacks to add to the collection. If the children in your family no longer read some of their Scholastic paperback books please consider donating them to our library. The branch is also soliciting paperback classics to increase the selection and have duplicates of titles especially needed by the teens. More changes are planned for the Costa Mesa/Donald Dungan Branch. Drop by for a visit and be surprised with the new look.
