Mesa Verde Library News January 2008

Winter is here. The cooler weather is perfect for getting cozy before a fire with a good book and reading to your heart’s content. This is one of my favorite times of year at the library. It is the slow time of year, time to reflect on the year past and plan for the coming New Year.
Children’s programming has been busy this year. The Storytimes ended this month with a highly successful visit from Santa. He read stories to the kids and took time to talk to each child. Storytime begins again at the end of January. Please call the library at 714-546-5274 to register for Storytime or for more details.
Origami Kai will return for their annual visit on January 24th. Registration is required. You can do this in person at the library or by phone.
With the coming New Year, I will be moving to the El Toro Library. It has been a wonderful pleasure to work with you, the Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries and the staff of all three of the libraries. It has been great to work with the patrons of the Mesa Verde Library. Costa Mesa has impressed me with its growth and sense of community.
Most of all it has been inspiring to see the growth that the Friends have experienced since I came to Mesa Verde Library in May 2004. You have developed into a progressing, expanding and cutting edge Friends group. You are the first Friends group in OCPL to use a passport service to raise funds. You developed one of the best pre-owned book stores in Orange County here at the Mesa Verde Library. All your hard work is focused on a new state-of-the-arts library. And I know you will succeed in all your efforts. It has been a very great honor to be a very small part of this.
It is hard to leave Mesa Verde with its wonderful staff and great patrons. I plan to stop by from time to time. You will see me here when you open the doors to your new state-of-the-arts library.
A Very Giving Bookstore
By Sherrie Neft
This year, our “Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries” Mesa Verde Branch Library Bookstore will be celebrating its second anniversary with a big bash, public invited, on March 15, 2008. We are more organized and efficient than ever. We sell gift certificates, book bags, DVD’s, CD’s, audio books, books with large print, VHS movies (we still have some available), books of all categories, and we always provide membership to “Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries” for the low price of $15.00 yearly. All of this helps to support our three Costa Mesa libraries.
We continue to offer special sales, and special, very low prices including the “buck a bag” on Saturdays and Sundays, and fabulous, very low priced “teacher sets.” So often teachers, reading specialists, school librarians, and other school resource personnel use their own money to supplement materials that schools do not provide.
We are very proud to say that we have donated many of our surplus books to a number of charity organizations as follows: the Theo Lacy Jail, Shelters, senior citizens centers and retirement homes, the Fairview Developmental Center, the Early Literacy Program for Low Income Families, Reach Out and Read, and the Home Based Activities Building Language Acquisition Program (HABLA), just to mention a few. Our goal is to continue assisting these programs with our excess books.
All our bookstore materials are donations from our very generous Costa Mesa community. All our bookstore workers including managers are volunteers who are a very cooperative, cohesive group of bookstore aficionados giving their energy, time, labor and dedication to this success.
We can always use more committed volunteers who would love a fun, worthwhile experience a few hours a week helping categorize, price, and make decisions about books, in a clean, well organized, stylish environment, with decor to represent the current season and holidays.
Please do come in and enjoy!! Our normal hours are:
Days/Hours: Tues. through Thursday, Sat, Sun
1:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M.
Location: Corner of Mesa Verde East and Baker, behind MV Library in SE corner of the parking lot

This months book theme choice is “Popular Fiction,” and the author of choice is Patricia Cornwell.
Cornwall was born in Miami Florida in the mid fifties and grew up in North Carolina. She has written both fiction and biography. Her biography about Mrs. Billy Graham,
“A Time For Remembering” was published in 1993 and won many prestigious awards. Although Ms. Cornwell is known best for her crime novels featuring Kay Scarpetta, Ms. Cornwell has also wrote a forensic fact based book on Jack the Ripper; “Portrait Of A Killer: Jack The Ripper – Case Closed” in 2002.
Her last published novel, “Book Of The Dead” was published in October 2007 and spent many weeks on the New York Times best selling list.
